Ferguson “Fergie” Arthur Jenkins Jr. is a Canadian baseball icon and one of the most dominant pitchers of his era. Known for his powerful right arm, exceptional control, and remarkable durability, Jenkins forged a Hall of Fame career spanning 19 seasons (1965-1983).
Jenkins began his career with the Philadelphia Phillies, making his debut in 1965. However his career truly took off after a trade to the Chicago Cubs in 1966. The Cubs converted him into a full-time starting pitcher, a move that would define his legacy. From 1967 to 1972, Jenkins achieved a feat rarely seen in modern baseball: he strung together six consecutive 20-win seasons. During this period, he was one of the most reliable and effective pitchers in the game. In 1971, Jenkins had a truly phenomenal season, posting a 24-13 record with a 2.77 ERA, 325 strikeouts, and an incredible 30 complete games. This performance earned him the National League Cy Young Award, making him the first Canadian to win the prestigious pitching honor.
After his dominant run with the Cubs, Jenkins was traded to the Texas Rangers. In 1974, he continued his winning ways, recording a career-high 25 wins with a 2.82 ERA, earning him the American League Comeback Player of the Year Award and a second-place finish in AL Cy Young voting. He also had a two-year stint with the Boston Red Sox before returning to the Cubs for the final two seasons of his career in 1982 and 1983, allowing him to retire as a Cub.
Ferguson Jenkins was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991 on his third ballot, becoming the first Canadian ever enshrined in Cooperstown. His plaque highlights his remarkable combination of durability, control, and strikeout ability. In addition he was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987, the Chicago Cubs retired his uniform No. 31 in 2009 and he was a recipient of the Order of Canada in 2007.
