Donald Howard “Don” Sutton was a legendary right-handed pitcher whose career epitomized consistency, durability, and quiet excellence over 23 seasons in Major League Baseball (1966-1988). He pitched for five different teams, but is most fondly remembered for his long and successful tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Sutton signed with the Dodgers in 1964 and made his debut in 1966. He quickly established himself as a cornerstone of the Dodgers’ rotation, joining fellow Hall of Famers Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale early in his career. Sutton amassed 3,574 strikeouts during his career, which ranked him fifth all-time at the time of his retirement. He was the eighth pitcher in MLB history to reach 3,000 strikeouts. He helped lead the Dodgers to four National League pennants (1974, 1977, 1978, 1981 – though he was traded before the ’81 WS win) and played in three World Series with them.

After leaving the Dodgers as a free agent in 1980, Sutton pitched for the Houston Astros (1981-1982), Milwaukee Brewers (1982-1984), Oakland Athletics (1985), and California Angels (1985-1987) before returning to the Dodgers for a final stint in 1988. On June 18, 1986, at the age of 41, Sutton achieved a major career milestone, recording his 300th career victory with the California Angels. Sutton was a four-time All-Star (1972, 1973, 1975, 1977).

After retiring from baseball in 1988, Don Sutton embarked on a successful second career as a baseball broadcaster. He worked for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers, and most notably, the Atlanta Braves on TBS and Bally Sports South for nearly three decades.

Don Sutton was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998 on his fifth ballot, receiving 81.6% of the vote.
