John Joseph “Johnny” Podres was a left-handed pitcher who became a legendary figure in Brooklyn Dodgers lore, most notably for his heroic performance in the 1955 World Series. He played the majority of his 15-year Major League Baseball career (1953-1966) with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, later having stints with the Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres.

The Brooklyn Dodgers had a history of World Series futility against their cross-town rivals, the New York Yankees, losing seven previous Fall Classics. In 1955, after falling behind 2-0 in the series, a young Podres stepped up. He pitched a complete-game, seven-hit victory in Game 3 on his 23rd birthday. Then, in the decisive Game 7 at Yankee Stadium, he delivered a masterful complete-game, 2-0 shutout to secure the Dodgers’ first and only World Series championship in Brooklyn. For his clutch performance, he was awarded the inaugural World Series Most Valuable Player Award and the Babe Ruth Award. He was also a four-time All-Star (1958, 1960 – twice, 1962).

After retiring as a player, Johnny Podres transitioned into a successful career as a pitching coach, working for several MLB teams including the San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, Minnesota Twins, and Philadelphia Phillies.
