Overview of 1988 Fleer Baseball Cards
The 1988 Fleer baseball card set is a popular and nostalgic set for many collectors, known for its distinctive design and place in the “junk wax” era of the late 1980s.
Set Design and Features: The 1988 Fleer set consists of 660 cards. The design features a posed or in-action color photograph of the player, framed by a white border with red and blue diagonal stripes. The player’s name and position are at the top left, with the team logo in the upper right. The back of the cards includes biographical information and yearly statistics. The cards are organized by the order in which teams finished in the previous season and then alphabetically by player name.
Notable Rookie Cards: While the set is from an era of massive production, there are several key rookie cards and star player cards that are sought after by collectors, especially in high grades. The most significant rookie cards in the set include:
- Edgar Martinez: This is a key rookie card for the Hall of Fame slugger.
- Tom Glavine: Another important rookie card for a Hall of Fame pitcher.
- Mark Grace: A popular player with Cubs fans, his rookie card is a notable one in the set.
Value and Collectability: Due to the immense production numbers of baseball cards in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the 1988 Fleer set is generally not considered to be highly valuable. Complete sets, boxes, and individual common cards are widely available and can be found for relatively low prices. However, certain cards, particularly the key rookie and star player cards, can have some value, especially if they are in Gem Mint condition (PSA 10). The value of these cards is primarily driven by their condition and the demand from collectors of specific players or Hall of Famers.
