Billy Leo Williams, often referred to as “Sweet Swingin’ Billy,” was a gracefully smooth left-handed hitter and outfielder who spent the vast majority of his illustrious 18-season Major League Baseball career (1959-1976) with the Chicago Cubs (1959-1974).
Williams was part of the iconic Cubs teams of the 1960s, alongside fellow Hall of Famers Ernie Banks and Ron Santo. Despite the team’s lack of postseason success, Williams’ individual brilliance shone brightly. In his first full season, Williams immediately made an impact, hitting 25 home runs with 86 RBIs, earning him the NL Rookie of the Year Award. He was a six-time All-Star (1962, 1964, 1965, 1968, 1972, 1973). Williams concluded his career with two seasons playing for the Oakland Athletics, winning a division title in 1975.
Billy Williams was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987. His uniform No. 26 was retired by the Chicago Cubs, and a statue honoring him stands outside Wrigley Field, cementing his place as one of the franchise’s all-time greats. After his playing career, he remained involved with the Cubs organization as a coach for many years, continuing to be a beloved and respected figure in Chicago baseball.
Billy Williams’ most recognized and collected rookie card is this 1961 Topps #141. This card is part of the extensive 1961 Topps set, which returned to a vertical design. It features a color photograph of a young Williams in his Chicago Cubs uniform.
