Charles “Chuck” Joseph Hiller was a left-handed hitting second baseman who played in Major League Baseball for eight seasons (1961-1968). Hiller spent the first part of his big-league career with the San Francisco Giants, making his debut in 1961. His best season came in 1962, when he served as the Giants’ primary starting second baseman. In Game 4 of the 1962 World Series against the New York Yankees, Hiller hit the first grand slam by a National League player in World Series history. After his time with the Giants, Hiller was traded to the New York Mets during the 1965 season. He also played briefly for the Philadelphia Phillies (1967) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (1968) before retiring from playing.
After his playing career, Chuck Hiller transitioned into coaching and managing. He spent many years as a coach, including stints with the Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals, and St. Louis Cardinals, often serving under manager Whitey Herzog.
