Charles “Charlie” Lenard Neal was a right-handed second baseman and shortstop who played eight seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) between 1956 and 1963.
Neal is perhaps best remembered as a key member of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the early years following their move from Brooklyn. Despite his relatively slight build, he was a productive hitter who brought a combination of speed and surprising power to the middle infield.
Neal’s best season came in 1959 when he earned a number of accolades, including being named to the All-Star team twice (MLB held two All-Star Games from 1959 to 1962) and winning the Gold Glove Award for his exceptional defense at second base. He helped lead the Dodgers to a World Series championship. In the 1959 Fall Classic against the Chicago White Sox, Neal was the batting star of the series, hitting an outstanding .370 with two critical home runs in Game 2.
