Donald “Don” Louis Mossi was a left-handed pitcher who enjoyed a successful 12-season career in Major League Baseball from 1954 to 1965. He was known for his high strikeout-to-walk ratio, pinpoint control, and his distinctive appearance, which earned him the famous, if sometimes unkind, nicknames “Ears” and “The Sphinx.”
Mossi began his MLB journey with the Cleveland Indians in 1954. He was an integral part of one of the greatest pitching staffs in history that season, contributing to the Indians’ then-record 111 wins. Primarily used as a reliever, Mossi was highly effective, posting a stellar 1.94 ERA in his rookie year and making three scoreless appearances in the 1954 World Series. In 1957, following a transition to the starting rotation, he earned his only All-Star selection.
He was traded to the Detroit Tigers after the 1958 season, a move that allowed him to fully transition to a starting role. His most productive years followed, including a superb 1959 campaign where he went 17–9 with a 3.36 ERA, and another strong season in 1961 where he finished 15–7 with a 2.96 ERA for a 101-win Tigers team. He later finished his career with brief stints with the Chicago White Sox and the Kansas City Athletics.
