Frank James Malzone was a right-handed Major League Baseball (MLB) third baseman who played for 12 seasons, from 1955 to 1966. He is best known as a fixture for the Boston Red Sox during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Malzone was highly regarded for his defensive prowess at the “hot corner.” He won the very first Gold Glove Award given to a third baseman in 1957 (when the award covered both leagues), and went on to win the award again in 1958 and 1959. Throughout his career, he made the All-Star team eight times (1957–1960, 1963, and 1964). He spent 11 seasons with the Red Sox (1955–1965), where he led all American League third basemen in double plays a record five consecutive times at one point. His first full season in 1957 was a major success, as he batted .292 with a career-high 103 RBIs.
Malzone finished his playing career with the California Angels in 1966. Over his full MLB career, he posted a lifetime .274 batting average, collected 1,486 hits, and recorded 133 home runs and 728 RBIs.
Following his playing days, Malzone rejoined the Red Sox organization, where he served for many years as a scout and special assignment instructor. He was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in its inaugural class of 1995.
