Roberto Clemente was a transcendent figure in baseball, celebrated not just for his incredible talent on the field but also for his humanitarian efforts. The Puerto Rican right fielder played his entire 18-season Major League Baseball career (MLB) 1955-1972 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He become one of the most exciting and respected players of his generation. Clemente possessed a powerful bat, exceptional speed, and an arm that was legendary. Some would describe his as a “rifle” from right field.
Clemente amassed exactly 3,000 hits in his final at-bat, finished with a career .317 batting average, hit 240 home runs, and drove in 1,305 runs. He was a 12-time Gold Glove Award winner (winning every year from 1961 until his final season), a 15-time All-Star, and a four-time National League batting champion. Clemente led the Pirates to two World Series championships (1960 and 1971), earning the World Series MVP in the latter. His life was tragically cut short on December 31, 1972, when his plane, carrying aid for earthquake victims in Nicaragua, crashed. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973.
