Sandy Amorós (Edmundo Amorós Isasi) was a Cuban professional baseball left fielder whose seven-season Major League Baseball (MLB) career is most famously defined by a single, iconic defensive play that helped the Brooklyn Dodgers win their only World Series title.
Amorós played for the Brooklyn / Los Angeles Dodgers (1952, 1954–1957, 1959–1960) and Detroit Tigers (1960). He is best remembered for a spectacular catch in the 6th inning of Game 7 of the 1955 World Series against the New York Yankees. With the Dodgers holding a 2-0 lead and runners on first and second with nobody out, he was brought in as a defensive replacement. Yogi Berra hit a slicing line drive down the left-field line. Amorós sprinted toward the corner, made a diving, backhand catch inches from the foul line and the wall, and immediately threw the ball back to the infield. The play resulted in a double play that saved the lead and the game, securing the Brooklyn Dodgers their first (and only) World Series championship.
Following the Cuban Revolution, Amorós encountered political difficulties and financial hardship back in Cuba. In a famous act of kindness, the Dodgers briefly added him to their roster in 1967 when he was able to leave Cuba, which allowed him to earn the necessary service time for an MLB pension.
