Steven Norman “Steve” Carlton, known as “Lefty,” was one of the most dominant and iconic left-handed pitchers in baseball history. His illustrious 24-season Major League Baseball career (1965-1988).
Carlton began his career with the Cardinals, quickly showcasing his potential. He was part of the 1967 World Series championship team and was an All-Star three times with the Cardinals. After a trade, Carlton joined the Philadelphia Phillies in 1972. It was with the Phillies that he truly ascended to superstar status and became a franchise legend.
In his first season with a last-place Phillies team (who finished 59-97), Carlton delivered one of the most astounding individual seasons in baseball history. He won 27 games (nearly half of his team’s total wins), with a 1.97 ERA and 310 strikeouts, earning him the National League Pitching Triple Crown and his first of four Cy Young Awards. Carlton became the first pitcher to win four Cy Young Awards in his career (1972, 1977, 1980, 1982). Only Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson, and Roger Clemens have matched or surpassed that total. Carlton anchored the pitching staff of the 1980 Philadelphia Phillies World Series championship team, their first title in franchise history.
Carlton reached the coveted 300-win plateau on September 24, 1983, becoming just the 16th pitcher to do so at the time. He was a 10-time All-Star (1968, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1974, 1977, 1979-1982) and won a Gold Glove Award in 1981.
After leaving the Phillies in 1986, Carlton had brief stints with the San Francisco Giants, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, and Minnesota Twins before retiring in 1988. Steve Carlton was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994 on his first ballot, receiving 95.82% of the votes, one of the highest percentages ever. The Philadelphia Phillies retired his uniform No. 32 in 1989, and a statue of him was erected outside Citizens Bank Park in 2004.
Steve Carlton’s official rookie card is this 1965 Topps #477. This card is part of the classic 1965 Topps set, famous for its colorful team pennant design. It’s a multi-player rookie card, featuring Steve Carlton alongside fellow Cardinals rookie Fred Ackley.
