Bill “Mad Dog” Madlock was one of the most prolific pure hitters of his era, known for his remarkable ability to consistently hit for a high batting average. His 15-season Major League Baseball career (1973-1987) saw him win an impressive four National League batting titles, a feat achieved by very few players.
Madlock was originally drafted by the Washington Senators in 1970 and made his MLB debut with the Texas Rangers in September 1973. After the 1973 season, he was traded to the Chicago Cubs for legendary pitcher Ferguson Jenkins. This move proved to be a turning point for Madlock.
Madlock immediately made his mark with the Cubs, replacing Ron Santo at third base and hitting .313 in 1974. He quickly became known for his hitting prowess, winning his first NL batting title in 1975 with a superb .354 average. He followed that up by repeating as batting champion in 1976, hitting .339, narrowly edging out Ken Griffey Sr. on the final day of the season. He earned his first of three All-Star selections in 1975 and was even named the All-Star Game MVP.
Madlock’s career, while marked by incredible hitting, also saw him play for several different teams due to trades, often related to contract disputes or his sometimes fiery temperament. San Francisco Giants (1977-1979), Pittsburgh Pirates (1979-1985): In June 1979, an unhappy Madlock was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates. This proved to be a pivotal move, as he returned to third base and became a key piece of the “We Are Family” team that went on to win the 1979 World Series. He continued his hitting excellence with the Pirates, winning two more NL batting titles in the strike-shortened 1981 season (.341) and again in 1983 (.333). This made him the first player to win multiple batting titles with two different teams. He also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1985-1987), Detroit Tigers (1987) and he played one season in Japan for the Lotte Orions in 1988 before retiring from professional play.
After his playing career, Madlock has remained involved in baseball as a coach.
