Willie Clay Upshaw is a former Major League Baseball player who had a notable career as a first baseman and designated hitter, primarily known for his time with the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1980s.
After making his debut in 1978, Upshaw spent 1979 in Triple-A, but returned to the majors in 1980 and 1981, seeing inconsistent playing time. In 1982, at the age of 25, he became the Blue Jays’ regular first baseman, a position he transitioned to with the help of veteran John Mayberry. Upshaw had his best MLB season in 1983. He became the first Blue Jays player to record 100 RBIs in a single season, finishing with 104 RBIs while batting an impressive .306 with 27 home runs and 7 triples. His strong performance earned him an 11th-place finish in the AL MVP voting.
After the 1987 season, with the emergence of Fred McGriff at first base for the Blue Jays, Upshaw’s contract was sold to the Cleveland Indians, where he played his final MLB season.
Following his Major League career, Upshaw played two seasons in Japan for the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks. After retiring as a player, Upshaw transitioned into coaching and managing.
