Vernon Edgell “Vern” Bickford was a right-handed starting pitcher whose entire Major League career (1948–1954) was spent with the Boston/Milwaukee Braves, save for one final game with the Baltimore Orioles. He was an integral part of the last Braves team to win a pennant in Boston.
Bickford joined Hall of Famer Warren Spahn and All-Star Johnny Sain to form the core rotation for the 1948 Boston Braves team that won the National League pennant. This staff was immortalized by the saying, “Spahn and Sain and pray for rain.”
The high point of his career came on August 11, 1950, when he threw a 7–0 no-hitter against the rival Brooklyn Dodgers at Braves Field. It was the only Major League no-hitter of the 1950 season.
Bickford’s path to the majors was delayed by military service in World War II. He served in the U.S. Army, where he continued to play baseball and received coaching that helped improve his control, leading to his eventual major league success.
Unfortunately, his career was cut short by recurring arm injuries. After moving with the Braves to Milwaukee in 1953, he struggled and made only one appearance for the Orioles in 1954 before retiring from professional baseball due to his arm troubles. He died tragically young in 1960 at the age of 39 from stomach cancer.
