Eddie Yost was a durable third baseman and an exceptionally patient hitter whose career spanned 18 seasons. He is best known by his nickname, “The Walking Man,” for his extraordinary ability to draw bases on balls. He played for the Washington Senators (1944, 1946–1958), Detroit Tigers (1959–1960), and Los Angeles Angels (1961–1962) Primarily at Third Base.
He totaled 1,614 career walks, which ranks him highly on the all-time list (ahead of Hall of Famers like Hank Aaron, Stan Musial, and Willie Mays). He led the American League in walks six times. He was the first third baseman in MLB history to appear in over 2,000 games at the position. He was the first player to bat for the expansion Los Angeles Angels franchise in their inaugural game in 1961. Yost was a one-time All-Star selection in 1952.
After retiring as a player, Yost had a long and successful career as an MLB coach. He spent 22 years coaching for the Senators, Mets, and Red Sox. He earned a World Series ring as the third-base coach for the 1969 “Miracle Mets.”
