Robin Roberts was a legendary right-handed pitcher, primarily known for his dominant career with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1948 to 1961.
He was a cornerstone of the “Whiz Kids” Phillies team that captured the National League pennant in 1950, their first in 35 years. From 1950 to 1955, Roberts was arguably the most dominant pitcher in the National League, recording six consecutive 20-win seasons. During this period, he led the NL in victories four times (1952-1955).
Roberts was known for his incredible endurance. He led the league in innings pitched for five consecutive seasons (1951-1955) and complete games for five consecutive seasons (1952-1956). He even pitched 28 consecutive complete games during the 1952 and 1953 seasons.
His impact on the Phillies franchise is undeniable. His number 36 was the first number retired by the Phillies in 1962, and he was the first Phillie inducted into the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame. A statue of Roberts stands outside Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies’ home stadium. His outstanding career was recognized with his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.
Roberts was a challenging pitcher for hitters due to his pinpoint control and willingness to challenge batters. While he eventually transitioned from a power pitcher to a more cunning craftsman later in his career, his consistent effectiveness remained.
