Terry Bluford Moore was an exceptional center fielder who played his entire Major League career with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a highly respected leader, known for his defensive prowess and competitive spirit, serving as the captain of the great Cardinals teams of the late 1930s and 1940s.
Moore was a key leader, often referred to as “The Captain” of the Cardinals. Hall of Famers like Stan Musial and Enos Slaughter recognized him as the “club’s inspiration” and the “glue” that held the team together. He was a pivotal player on two World Series championship teams (1942 and 1946). Moore was selected to four consecutive All-Star teams (1939–1942).
Moore’s playing career was interrupted by his service in the United States Army during World War II, causing him to miss the 1943, 1944, and 1945 seasons.
After retiring as a player, Moore remained active in baseball as a coach and manager. He served two terms as a Cardinals coach (1949–1952; 1956–1958). He also served as the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies for the second half of the 1954 season.
