The baseball career of Carl Furillo (nicknamed “The Reading Rifle”) is synonymous with the Brooklyn Dodgers dynasty of the 1950s. He was renowned for his powerful throwing arm, consistent hitting, and stoic demeanor. Furillo earned his famous nickname, “The Reading Rifle,” due to his incredibly strong and accurate throwing arm, which he honed growing up in Reading, Pennsylvania.
Baserunners learned quickly not to test Furillo. He was famous for his ability to cut down runners trying to take an extra base, throwing darts from deep right field to third base or home plate. He led National League outfielders in assists three times (1950, 1952, and 1953) and led in double plays twice.
Furillo was a key member of the Dodgers teams that won the NL pennant six times and, finally, their first and only World Series title in Brooklyn in 1955 against the New York Yankees.
