The baseball career of Billy Cox is defined by his brilliant defense at third base for the iconic “Boys of Summer” Brooklyn Dodgers of the late 1940s and early 1950s. While never an offensive star, he was widely considered one of the best fielding third basemen of his era.

Cox played for a number of teams including Pittsburgh Pirates (1941, 1946–1947), Brooklyn Dodgers (1948–1954), and Baltimore Orioles (1955). He posted a career batting average of .262 with 66 home runs and 351 runs batted in (RBI). While a light hitter, his glove was his main contribution. He was often called “Hoss” or “Horse” by teammates, reportedly due to his long, narrow face.

Cox’s career was interrupted by four years of military service during World War II, where he served in the U.S. Army’s 814th Signal Corps in theaters including North Africa, Europe, and the Pacific (Guadalcanal).

His playing time began to diminish in his final years in Brooklyn due to a combination of injuries and the emergence of younger players like Jim Gilliam, who moved Jackie Robinson to third base.

He was traded to the Baltimore Orioles for the 1955 season, where he played briefly before retiring rather than accepting another trade.
