James Barton “Mickey” Vernon was one of the most consistent and durable American League first basemen of the post-World War II era. He is most strongly associated with the Washington Senators, where he played for 14 seasons. His career spanned an impressive 20 major league seasons (1939-1960).
Vernon is a 2x American League Batting Champion and won his first title with a career-high .353 average, beating out Ted Williams in 1946. In 1953 he won his second title with a .337 average, narrowly edging out Al Rosen (who was chasing the Triple Crown) by a single point. He was selected to the AL All-Star team seven times between 1946 and 1958. Vernon is one of only a handful of players to appear in a major league game in four different decades (1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s).
Like many players of his generation, his career was interrupted when he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, causing him to miss the entire 1944 and 1945 seasons.
After retiring as a player, Vernon went on to manage, including a stint with the expansion Washington Senators (later the Texas Rangers) from 1961–1963. He remained in baseball as a coach and minor league manager for many years.
