Bill Mazeroski, nicknamed “Maz,” was a legendary second baseman who played his entire 17-year career (1956-1972) for the Pittsburgh Pirates. While he is most famous for a single, iconic moment, his career was defined by his exceptional defensive skills.

Mazeroski’s legacy is forever tied to the final play of the 1960 World Series. In Game 7 against the heavily favored New York Yankees, the score was tied 9-9 in the bottom of the ninth inning. With no outs and Mazeroski leading off, he hit a walk-off home run off of Yankees pitcher Ralph Terry. The ball sailed over the left-field wall at Forbes Field, securing a 10-9 victory and the World Series championship for the Pirates.

Beyond his famous home run, Mazeroski was renowned for his defensive prowess at second base. He was a master at turning double plays and possessed extraordinary range. He won eight Gold Glove Awards, given to the best defensive players at each position. He was a seven-time All-Star.

Mazeroski was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001 by the Veterans Committee, an honor that recognized his status as one of the greatest defensive players in baseball history.
