James Paul David “Jim” Bunning was an American professional baseball pitcher and politician. He has been elected to both the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the United States Senate.
Bunning pitched in Major League Baseball for 17 seasons (1955-1971) with the Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Los Angeles Dodgers. He pitched a no-hitter in both the American and National Leagues, a feat only accomplished by a handful of pitchers. Bunning pitched a perfect game on Father’s Day, June 21, 1964, for the Philadelphia Phillies against the New York Mets. He as also a nine-time All-Star.
He was a key figure in the Major League Baseball Players Association, helping to transform it into a successful labor union.
Bunning was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996.
After his baseball career, Bunning entered politics. He served on the city council of Fort Thomas, Kentucky, and then in the Kentucky State Senate. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Kentucky’s 4th congressional district in 1986 and served 12 years. In 1998, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, serving two terms until 2011. He was succeeded by Rand Paul.
