Don Richard “Richie” Ashburn was a fleet-footed, Hall of Fame center fielder and one of the most prolific leadoff hitters of his era. He is regarded as an icon of Philadelphia baseball, where he played for 12 of his 15 seasons.

Ashburn played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1948–1959), Chicago Cubs (1960–1961), and the expansion New York Mets (1962). He played Center Field and was known for his tremendous speed, defense, and ability to hit to all fields (“spray hitter”). He retired with a stellar .308 career batting average and compiled 2,574 hits. He was a master at getting on base, finishing with a career .396 On-Base Percentage (OBP). He led the National League in hitting twice, batting .338 in 1955 and a career-best .350 in 1958. He was selected to the All-Star team six times.

Ashburn was a central figure on the 1950 “Whiz Kids” Phillies team that surprisingly won the NL pennant. He sealed the pennant with a famous, clutch throw from center field to home plate in the final, dramatic game against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Following his playing days, Ashburn became even more beloved in Philadelphia through his second career as a broadcaster. He served as a beloved radio and TV color commentator for the Phillies from 1963 until his death in 1997. He worked for decades alongside the late, great Harry Kalas, forming one of baseball’s most iconic broadcasting duos, celebrated for their witty banter and homespun humor.

Richie Ashburn was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1995. His uniform number 1 has been retired by the Philadelphia Phillies.
