Edmund Walter “Ed” Lopat, also known as “The Junkman” or “Steady Eddie,” was a left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball from 1944 to 1955. He played for the Chicago White Sox (1944–1947), the New York Yankees (1948–1955), and the Baltimore Orioles (1955).
Lopat is best remembered for his time with the New York Yankees, where he was part of the “Big Three” pitching staff alongside Allie Reynolds and Vic Raschi. He was a 5-time World Series champion with the Yankees, winning five consecutive titles from 1949 through 1953. He was known as a “junk man” who relied on trickery, control, and a variety of slower pitches, rather than overpowering velocity.
After retiring as a player, Lopat managed the Kansas City Athletics from 1963–1964.
