Chester “Chet” Earl Lemon was a professional baseball outfielder who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 16 seasons, from 1975 to 1990. He was known for his strong defense in center field and his consistent offensive production.
Lemon started his career with the Chicago White Sox (1975–1981) before being traded to the Detroit Tigers, where he played the remainder of his career (1982–1990). He was widely regarded as one of the best defensive center fielders in baseball from 1977 to 1987. In 1977, he set an American League record with 512 outfield putouts, which was the fourth-highest single-season tally in major league history at the time.
Lemon was a three-time American League All-Star (1978, 1979, and 1984). He was the starting center fielder for the 1984 Detroit Tigers team that won the World Series. He contributed significantly to their dominant season, including driving in 50 runs in the first 40 games as the Tigers started with a 35-5 record.
After retiring, Chet Lemon became a baseball instructor and coach, including starting the Chet Lemon School of Baseball in 1993 and coaching high school and travel ball.
Chet Lemon’s recognized rookie card is this 1976 Topps #590 card, which features him alongside other outfielders: Henry Cruz, Ellis Valentine, and Terry Whitfield.
