Ron Guidry, often affectionately known as “Louisiana Lightning” or “Gator” due to his fast pitching and Louisiana roots, was a dominant left-handed pitcher who spent his entire 14-year Major League Baseball career (1975-1988) with the New York Yankees.
Guidry truly burst onto the scene in 1977, helping the Yankees win the World Series. However, his 1978 season is widely considered one of the greatest single seasons by a pitcher in MLB history. He posted an astonishing 25-3 record with a league-leading 1.74 ERA, 248 strikeouts, and 9 shutouts. For this remarkable performance, he unanimously won the American League Cy Young Award and finished second in AL MVP voting. Guidry was a key component of the Yankees teams that won back-to-back World Series championships in 1977 and 1978. He was a four-time American League All-Star (1978, 1979, 1982, 1983).
Known for his excellent fielding, Guidry won five consecutive Gold Glove Awards from 1982 to 1986.
After retiring as a player in 1988, Guidry remained involved with the Yankees organization, serving as a pitching coach from 2006 to 2007.
