Ralph McPherran Kiner was one of baseball’s most prodigious home run hitters, dominating the National League for a significant stretch in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Despite a career cut short by injury, his power numbers and impressive consistency secured his place in the Hall of Fame. After his playing days, he became a beloved and long-tenured broadcaster.
Kiner was a right-handed outfielder who played for 10 seasons in MLB (1946-1955). He spent the bulk of his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1946-1953), followed by stints with the Chicago Cubs (1953-1954) and the Cleveland Indians (1955). Kiner’s defining characteristic was his ability to hit the ball out of the park. He led the National League in home runs in each of his first seven seasons.
Ralph Kiner was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975 in his final year of eligibility, on his 13th ballot. His short but intensely powerful career, marked by unprecedented home run leadership, earned him the recognition. The Pittsburgh Pirates retired his uniform number 4 in his honor. He was also inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame.
