Albert Fred “Red” Schoendienst was a highly respected figure in Major League Baseball, known for his exceptional playing career as a second baseman and his long, distinguished tenure as a coach and manager. A beloved icon of the St. Louis Cardinals, his career spanned parts of eight decades in baseball. Schoendienst was a switch-hitter known for his consistent contact and ability to hit for average. A 10-time All-Star (1946, 1948-1955, 1957), he famously hit a game-winning home run in the 14th inning of the 1950 All-Star Game.
After retiring as a player, Schoendienst immediately transitioned to coaching with the Cardinals. He was named manager in 1965 and led the team to two National League pennants (1967, 1968) and a World Series championship in 1967. Red Schoendienst was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989 by the Veterans Committee. His uniform No. 2 was retired by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1996.
