Rex Edward Barney was a right-handed pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1943 to 1950. He was known for his blazing fastball, which was considered one of the fastest in baseball during his era. Barney possessed a truly electric fastball that reportedly rivaled the velocity of future legends like Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson. He appeared in two World Series with the Dodgers, in 1947 and 1949, both against the New York Yankees.
After his playing career ended in 1950, largely due to persistent wildness that even a stint in the minor leagues couldn’t correct, Barney found a new calling. He became a beloved public address announcer for the Baltimore Orioles from 1969 until his death in 1997.
Rex Barney’s most prominent rookie card is this 1948 Bowman #41.
