Daniel “Danny” Edward Murtaugh was a beloved figure in baseball, renowned for his long association with the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he achieved his greatest success as a manager. His career in baseball spanned playing, coaching, and a highly impactful managerial tenure. Murtaugh played as a second baseman, shortstop, and third baseman in Major League Baseball for nine seasons (1941-1943, 1946-1951). He spent time with the Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Braves, and primarily the Pittsburgh Pirates (1948-1951).
Beyond his two World Series rings, Murtaugh led the Pirates to five division titles and compiled a career managerial record of 1,115 wins and 950 losses. His win total is second in Pirates history only to Fred Clarke. He was twice named The Sporting News Manager of the Year (1960 and 1970).
