Harry David Brecheen, affectionately known as “The Cat” for his quick reflexes and exceptional fielding on the mound, was a prominent left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. He spent the vast majority of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals, before a final season with the St. Louis Browns.
Brecheen is most famous for his incredible performance in the 1946 World Series against the Boston Red Sox. He became the first left-hander in MLB history to win three games in a single World Series, leading the Cardinals to an upset victory. He was a two-time All-Star (1947, 1948). True to his nickname, Brecheen was an outstanding defensive pitcher, leading or co-leading the NL in fielding percentage for pitchers three times (1944, 1948, 1950) and committing only eight errors in over 1,900 major-league innings. He finished his 14-year MLB career with a strong record of 133 wins and 92 losses, a career 2.92 ERA, and 901 strikeouts. In addition to his heroics in 1946, he was also part of the Cardinals’ World Series winning team in 1944.
After his playing days, Brecheen transitioned into coaching. He served as the pitching coach for the Baltimore Orioles from 1954 to 1967, where he mentored numerous young pitchers, including future Hall of Famer Jim Palmer, and contributed to the Orioles’ 1966 World Series championship.
