John Michael “Johnny” Pesky, affectionately known as “The Needle” and “Mr. Red Sox,” was a beloved and enduring figure in baseball for over seven decades. His career spanned playing, managing, coaching, and broadcasting, with a deep and lasting association with the Boston Red Sox. Pesky was a left-handed hitting infielder, primarily a shortstop and third baseman, who played 10 seasons in Major League Baseball (1942, 1946-1954). His playing career was interrupted by three years of service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, arguably costing him prime years of his career.
After retiring as a player, Pesky’s baseball journey continued extensively in managing and coaching roles, especially within the Red Sox organization. The Red Sox retired his uniform number 6 in 2008, a rare honor for a player not in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He is, however, a charter member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame.
