Virgil Oliver “Fire” Trucks also known as “Fireball”, was a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher whose career in Major League Baseball spanned 17 seasons. He was best known for his blazing fastball, which earned him his nicknames. Trucks spent the bulk of his career with the Tigers, establishing himself as a formidable presence on the mound. In 1949, Trucks led the American League in strikeouts with 153. He also led the league in shutouts that year. After his playing days, Trucks remained in baseball as a coach. He notably served as a pitching coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates, including their 1960 World Series championship team, which ironically defeated one of his former teams, the New York Yankees.
While he debuted in 1941, the 1948 Leaf is considered his primary rookie due to the typical production of cards at the time.
