Edward Raymond “Eddie” Stanky, nicknamed “The Brat” for his fiercely competitive and abrasive style of play, was a second baseman and a manager in Major League Baseball known for his high on-base percentage and willingness to do anything to win.
Despite a modest career batting average of .268, Stanky was an expert at drawing walks. He led the National League in walks three times and in OBP twice. His career OBP was an outstanding .410. Stanky was the Dodgers’ second baseman when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. Stanky was a staunch public defender of Robinson during the initial resistance and harassment.
Stanky had several stints as an MLB manager, transitioning to a player-manager role late in his playing career. He managed the Cardinals from 1952–1955. He was named The Sporting News Manager of the Year in 1952. Stanky managed Chicago White Sox from 1966–1968, leading a pennant contender in 1967. Notoriously he also managed the Texas Rangers for a single game in 1977 before resigning.
Eddie Stanky also had a highly successful run as the head baseball coach at the University of South Alabama from 1969 to 1983, building the program into a national power.
