Harvey Haddix, often nicknamed “The Kitten,” was a left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball for 14 seasons (1952-1965). While he had a solid and respectable career, he is immortalized in baseball history for one of the most remarkable and agonizing pitching performances ever witnessed.

Pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates against the formidable Milwaukee Braves (featuring future Hall of Famers Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews), Haddix threw 12 perfect innings, retiring 36 consecutive batters without allowing a single baserunner. It was arguably the greatest pitched game in baseball history. Despite pitching 12 perfect innings and holding the opponent hitless through 12.2 innings, Haddix was the tough-luck loser. Under modern MLB rules, a perfect game or no-hitter must go at least nine innings and end with no hits. Because the game went to extra innings and he eventually allowed a hit, it is no longer officially recognized as a perfect game or no-hitter.

Haddix found redemption the following season. He was a key member of the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates team that upset the New York Yankees in a thrilling seven-game World Series. He was also recognized for his defensive prowess, winning three consecutive Gold Glove Awards from 1958 to 1960.

After retiring as a player in 1965, Haddix remained in baseball as a highly respected pitching coach for several organizations, including the New York Mets (where he coached young pitchers like Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan), Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, and returning to the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he earned another World Series ring as a coach in 1979.
