The Yankees selected this 5’9″ Connecticut native in the 34th round of the 1965 draft out of Dean College. Shopay worked his way up quickly, making his big-league debut in late 1967.
In an 8-game September cameo, Shopay flashed immediate potential, batting .296 (8-for-27) with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs. He returned for a 28-game stint with the Bronx Bombers in 1969, primarily serving as a late-game defensive replacement in all three outfield positions.
Following the 1969 season, the Baltimore Orioles grabbed Shopay in the Rule 5 draft. He fit seamlessly into Earl Weaver’s roster puzzle, becoming a signature “Weaver-style” weapon off the bench. Because Weaver valued precise platoon matchups and pristine defense, Shopay found a home in Baltimore.
He spent 5 seasons over a 7-year span with the Orioles, contributing to the 1971 American League Pennant and appearing in 5 games of the 1971 World Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
