Oscar Gamble was an American professional baseball outfielder and designated hitter who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 17 seasons, from 1969 to 1985. He was known for his power hitting, his distinctive batting stance, and his famously large Afro hairdo.
Gamble played for seven different MLB teams: the Chicago Cubs (1969), Philadelphia Phillies (1970–1972), Cleveland Indians (1973–1975), New York Yankees (1976, 1979–1984), Chicago White Sox (1977, 1985), San Diego Padres (1978), and Texas Rangers (1979). He accumulated 200 home runs and 666 RBIs in his career. He was sometimes called “Ratio Man” due to his home run per at-bat ratio.
He played in two World Series with the New York Yankees. In 1976, he helped the Yankees win their first American League pennant in 12 seasons. He also made a World Series appearance in 1981 with the Yankees.
Gamble was famous for his unusual batting stance, a deep crouch with his back almost parallel to the ground, which he claimed helped him see the ball better.
Oscar Gamble’s recognized rookie card is this 1970 Topps #654 Rookie Stars card. This card features him alongside other rookies: Boots Day and Angel Mangual.
