William Ellis Russell, known as Bill Russell, had a remarkably consistent and lengthy Major League Baseball career, playing his entire 18 years (1969-1986) with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a key fixture in their infield, especially during the successful “Infield of Dreams” era with Steve Garvey (1B), Davey Lopes (2B), and Ron Cey (3B).
While he started his career as an outfielder, Russell transitioned to shortstop in 1972 and held that position for over a decade, becoming a highly respected defensive player. He also spent some time at second base and in the outfield later in his career.
Russell was a part of four National League pennant-winning Dodgers teams and one World Series championship team in 1981. He was a three-time National League All-Star (1973, 1976, 1980).
After retiring as a player, Russell remained with the Dodgers organization as a coach and eventually served as the team’s manager from 1996 to 1998, leading them to a playoff appearance in 1996. He also coached for other organizations and has worked for Major League Baseball’s umpiring division.
