Vida Blue was a dominant left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball from 1969 to 1986. He is best known for his time with the Oakland Athletics, where he was a key part of their dynasty that won three consecutive World Series championships from 1972 to 1974.
Blue had an incredible season in 1971, going 24-8 with a league-leading 1.82 ERA and 301 strikeouts. For this performance, he won both the American League Cy Young Award and the American League Most Valuable Player Award. He was the youngest player to win either award at the time. He threw a no-hitter against the Minnesota Twins on September 21, 1970, in just his 16th career game. He also contributed to a combined no-hitter in 1975.
Blue was a six-time All-Star (1971, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981). He was also the first pitcher in MLB history to start an All-Star Game for both the American League (1971) and the National League (1978). In addition to his 24-win season in 1971, he also had 20 wins in 1973 and 22 wins in 1975.
After his playing career, Blue remained associated with baseball and engaged in philanthropic work. He is a member of the Athletics Hall of Fame and the Giants Wall of Fame.
Vida Blue’s recognized rookie card is this 1970 Topps #21 Rookie Stars card, which features him alongside Gene Tenace.

Did You Know? Before he was a baseball superstar, Vida Blue was a phenomenal high school quarterback who threw for 3,484 yards and 35 touchdowns in his senior year alone, drawing heavy recruitment from top college football programs like Notre Dame. Additionally, he didn’t even start playing baseball until his senior year because his high school in Louisiana didn’t actually have a baseball team until he arrived.
