John Albert “Buck” Martinez is a notable figure in baseball, having had a career as a player, manager, and long-time broadcaster.
Martinez played 17 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a catcher. His career spanned from 1969 to 1986, and he played for the Kansas City Royals (1969–1971, 1973–1977), Milwaukee Brewers (1978–1980), and Toronto Blue Jays (1981–1986). He was known for his defensive skills behind the plate, including an accurate arm and his ability to handle pitchers. In 1985, he suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle in a home plate collision, but notably, he still managed to tag out two runners on the play.
After his playing days, Martinez transitioned to managing. He managed the Toronto Blue Jays from 2001 to May 2002. His record as Blue Jays manager was 100 wins and 115 losses, with a .465 winning percentage. He also managed Team USA at the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006.
Martinez is perhaps most widely recognized for his extensive broadcasting career. He began as a color analyst for Toronto Blue Jays games in 1987, immediately after retiring as a player. He has also worked for ESPN, TBS, and MLB Network, covering national broadcasts including the World Series and All-Star Games.
