Darrell Evans was a prominent Major League Baseball player who had a long and impactful career spanning 21 seasons, from 1969 to 1989. He was known for his power hitting and ability to draw walks, which led baseball historian Bill James to call him “the most underrated player in baseball history.”
Evans played for three different MLB teams: the Atlanta Braves (1969–1976, 1989), San Francisco Giants (1976–1983), and Detroit Tigers (1984–1988). He began his career primarily as a third baseman, but also spent significant time at first base and later as a designated hitter, particularly with the Tigers.
He is notable for being the first player to hit 40 or more home runs in both the National League (41 with the Braves in 1973) and the American League (40 with the Tigers in 1985). In 1985, at age 38, he led MLB in home runs, becoming the oldest player in the AL to hit 40 in a season at that time. He also became the first player to hit 30 or more home runs at age 40 (in 1987).
He won a World Series championship with the Detroit Tigers in 1984 and was a two-time All-Star (1973 with the Braves, 1983 with the Giants). Evans received MVP votes in 1973, 1983, 1985, and 1987, and was recognized with awards such as the MLB Player of the Month Award in 1983 and the Tiger of the Year Award in 1985.
Darrell Evans’ recognized rookie card is this 1970 Topps #621 Braves Rookies card. This card features him alongside other Braves rookies Mike McQueen and Rick Kester.
