The Minnesota Twins recognized Gorinski’s immense ceiling early, selecting the Pennsylvania high school standout in the first round (22nd overall) of the 1970 MLB Draft. Blessed with a physical 6’3″ frame, Gorinski took time to hone his approach but routinely punished minor league pitching as he climbed the organizational ladder.
Following his massive Triple-A campaign, Gorinski forced his way onto the Minnesota Twins’ big-league roster for the 1977 season. He made his major league debut on April 10, 1977, operating primarily as a corner outfielder and right-handed pinch hitter for manager Gene Mauch. While the transition to major league breaking balls proved challenging—resulting in a .195 batting average over 54 games—Gorinski flashed his signature run-producing ability by driving in 22 runs in just 118 at-bats.
He played his final major league game on October 1, 1977. Gorinski returned to the minor leagues for a couple of subsequent seasons with the Twins, Cubs, and Mets organizations before officially retiring from professional baseball in 1979.
Because his entire major league career was neatly contained within the 1977 calendar year, Gorinski’s standard cardboard footprint is highly focused. This 1978 Topps rookie card is Bob Gorinski’s official and only solo Topps card. Released the spring after his big-league stint, the card features the clean, photography-focused design of the 1978 set, capturing Gorinski in a classic profile shot wearing his Minnesota Twins jersey.
