Gene William Mauch (1925–2005) was one of the most intellectually respected and yet tragically star-crossed figures in Major League Baseball history. His career spanned six decades as a player and, most notably, as a manager.
Mauch played for seven teams, including the Brooklyn Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, Boston Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, and Boston Red Sox. He primarily played as a Second Baseman and Shortstop.
Mauch’s career is tragically defined by his near-misses. He holds the MLB record for the most games managed (3,942) and the most wins (1,902) without ever leading a team to a league pennant or a World Series.
