Gardenhire played five seasons as a shortstop and second baseman, entirely with the New York Mets. He was primarily a utility infielder, known for his defensive reliability rather than his bat. He finished his playing career with a .232 batting average and 4 home runs.
Gardenhire transitioned into coaching and eventually became one of the most respected managers of the 2000s.
- Minnesota Twins (2002–2014): He succeeded Tom Kelly and led the Twins to six American League Central Division titles. He was named the AL Manager of the Year in 2010.
- Detroit Tigers (2018–2020): He managed the Tigers during a rebuilding phase before retiring mid-season in 2020 due to health concerns.
He finished his career with 1,200 wins, ranking him among the top 50 winningest managers in MLB history.
