Sax played 14 seasons (1981–1994), primarily as a second baseman. He followed Fernando Valenzuela to become the second of four consecutive Dodgers to win NL Rookie of the Year (1982). After leaving LA as a free agent in 1988, he spent three productive years with the New York Yankees, where he set a franchise record for singles in a season (171 in 1989).
Sax was a perennial threat on the bases, stealing over 40 bases in six different seasons. He finished his career with 444 stolen bases.
In 1983, despite his offensive success, Sax famously developed a sudden inability to make routine throws to first base, committing 30 errors that season. This phenomenon is still occasionally referred to as “Steve Sax Syndrome.” He eventually overcame it, becoming a reliable defender and even leading the league in fielding percentage and double plays turned in later years.
