Sax played 14 seasons (1981–1994), primarily as a second baseman. He followed Fernando Valenzuela to become the second of four consecutive Dodgers to win NL Rookie of the Year (1982). After leaving LA as a free agent in 1988, he spent three productive years with the New York Yankees, where he set a franchise record for singles in a season (171 in 1989).
Sax was a perennial threat on the bases, stealing over 40 bases in six different seasons. He finished his career with 444 stolen bases.
In 1983, despite his offensive success, Sax famously developed a sudden inability to make routine throws to first base, committing 30 errors that season. This phenomenon is still occasionally referred to as “Steve Sax Syndrome.” He eventually overcame it, becoming a reliable defender and even leading the league in fielding percentage and double plays turned in later years.

Did You Know? Sax was the ultimate table-setter, specializing in driving opposing pitchers crazy once he reached base. His peak individual performance arrived during the magical 1988 regular season campaign, where he batted .277 with 176 hits and 42 stolen bases, serving as the emotional engine alongside Orel Hershiser and Kirk Gibson that propelled the underdog Dodgers to a historic 1988 World Series Championship victory over the Oakland Athletics.
Following that title, Sax signed a marquee free-agent contract with the New York Yankees. He adjusted beautifully to the American League, putting together an absolute masterclass of a 1989 season where he racked up a career-high 205 hits while batting .315 and swiping 43 bases.
