Did You Know? Davis didn’t just earn the respect of Cubs fans; he earned his very own country-western tribute anthem. During the magical 1984 NL East championship run, legendary Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray teamed up with a local group to popularize a novelty song set to the tune of The Battle Hymn of the Republic.
The chorus—featuring the line “Oh, Jody, Jody Davis, the catcher of our team”—was played incessantly over the WGN airwaves and blasted out of the stadium speakers. Davis fueled the musical hype by putting together a spectacular individual season, hitting .256 with 19 home runs and 94 RBIs, while starting a grueling 144 games behind the plate to guide the Cubs to their first postseason appearance in 39 years.
