Peña was famous for his unorthodox catching stance: he would sit with one leg extended flat on the ground. This allowed him to stay low for low pitches and—amazingly—he could still throw out baserunners from that seated position.

He played 18 seasons and was a mainstay for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the ’80s before joining the Cardinals, Red Sox, and Indians. Pena is a 5x All-Star: (1982, 1984–1986, 1989) with 4x Gold Glove awards. He is one of the few players to win the award in both the National League (Pirates) and American League (Red Sox).

After retiring, Peña became a highly respected leader in the dugout.

AL Manager of the Year (2003): He led the Kansas City Royals to their first winning season in a decade, engineering one of the biggest turnarounds in baseball history.

Yankees Legend: He spent over a decade (2006–2017) as a coach for the New York Yankees, winning a World Series ring in 2009.

World Baseball Classic: He managed the Dominican Republic to a perfect 8-0 record and a gold medal in the 2013 WBC.

Tony Pena shares this 1981 Topps “Future Stars” card with Vance Law and Pascual Perez.
