Fernando Valenzuela, affectionately known as “El Toro,” was a Mexican professional baseball player whose career spanned 17 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is widely considered the greatest Mexican-born player in baseball history and a cultural icon.

Valenzuela was known for his unconventional delivery, including a distinctive skyward glance at the peak of his windup, and his mastery of the screwball, a rare pitch that made him effective against both left and right-handed batters. Throughout the 1980s, he was a top pitcher, earning six consecutive All-Star selections from 1981 to 1986. He won two Silver Slugger Awards for his hitting and earned a Gold Glove Award in 1986. He had a career record of 173 wins and 153 losses with an ERA of 3.54 and 2,074 strikeouts.

After retiring as an MLB player in 1997, Valenzuela continued to be involved in baseball. He served as a Spanish-language color commentator for the Dodgers and SportsNet LA from 2003 until his death in 2024. The Dodgers retired his jersey number 34 in 2023.

Valenzuela has a couple major rookie cards, one being this 1981 Topps “Dodgers Future Stars” card #302. He shares this card with Jack Perconte and Mike Scioscia.
